3rd IADI Research Conference Held in Basel, Switzerland

The 3rd biennial Research Conference, organised by the International Association of Deposit Insurers (IADI) was held in Basel, Switzerland on 3-4 June 2015. The topic of this year’s conference was “Current Issues Facing Deposit Insurers”, with 160 participants from 60 jurisdictions taking part.

As a consequence of changes in the architecture of the financial safety net, the role of deposit guarantee systems has grown and new challenges have emerged. The conference provided a forum for discussion for representatives from the realm of science, deposit guarantee institutions and standard-setters in the domain of financial stability. The opening remarks for the event, titled “Aligning Deposit Insurance Research with Current Challenges in Light of the Growing Role of Deposit Insurance in the New Financial Safety Net Architecture,” were delivered by Mr. Jerzy Pruski, IADI President and Chair of its Executive Council.

The conference consisted of five thematic sessions, with the first two devoted to the presentation and discussion of several research papers. The three subsequent sessions explored the following topics: characteristics of deposit insurance systems in development, changing mandates of deposit insurance systems, and perspectives on the global financial safety net. The Keynote Speaker was Mr. Thomas Hoenig, Vice Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (USA), and the Distinguished Guest Speaker was Mr. William White, Former Head of the Monetary and Economic Department, Bank for International Settlements, and Chairman of the Economic Development and Review Committee, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
